Reporting to the Manager of the Admitting Department or other designee performs all scheduling and registration functions. Verifies eligibility for insurance benefits (Medicare, Medicaid, and MHP ). Initiates certification when necessary and obtains authorization prior to providing services as required by insurance carrier. Assists patients in obtaining financial counseling when necessary.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Schedules and pre-registers patients for ancillary services. Conducts interviews with patients regarding their demographic and insurance information. Works with a Financial Counselor for establishing payment arrangements when necessary
Assists and responds appropriately to callers regarding a variety of issues ranging from simple to complex issues.
Verifies insurance eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid and MHP patients.
Verifies that the diagnosis supplied by the physician is valid and meets the Local Medical Review Policy. Issues Advance Beneficiary Notice to the radiology department for the patients’ signature.
Determines if pre-certification or authorization is required prior to delivering services.
Assists in training new employees in the department. Continues to mentor and participate in evaluating their performance as require
Obtains authorization or initiates pre-certification as insurance necessitates or when Financial Counselors are unavailable.

Qualifications:

Minimum of two (2) years of registration, collection or financial counseling or scheduling experience. Must be proficient in healthcare billing, registration or collections.

Knowledge of healthcare payor requirements necessary.

Understands Hospital contracts and conditions of financial arrangements.

A working knowledge of medical terminology.

Completion of a High School Diploma or its equivalent.

Bilingual with proficiency in Spanish and English and requires the ability to speak clearly and professionally.

Typing skills of forty (40) words per minute with a three percent (3%) error rate or less to accurately and efficiently input data into the PC.

Working knowledge of a personal computer and software. Previous experience with Microsoft Excel and Word highly desirable.

The interpersonal skills necessary to discuss a variety of high level issues with physicians, patients, and all levels of management.
